Dave Kendall's career began before he completed his degree at the London School of Economics. "I'm moving to New York," he announced in cold calls to the editors of the three British weekly music papers: Melody Maker, Sounds and NewMelody Maker logo Musical Express. "Do you want any concert reviews from there?"

Only a skeptical Steve Sutherland at Melody Maker expressed much interest. "Send in a sample review of a concert before you leave," he said, "so we can see if you can write." Kendall sent in a review of a Sisters of Mercy Concert - and opened next week's issue to see it in print.

The sense of achievement faded once he got the check. Freelance music journalism, he realized, pays less than minimum wage - in Zimbabwe. Eye logo

Sobered but undaunted, he scored a gig as unpaid Reviews Editor of the hip independent

New York newspaper East Village Eye while supporting his journalism habit with a variety of day jobs - bus boy, apartment cleaner and club bouncer among the more glamorous.

Even when Kendall's finances improved dramatically after his overnight metamorphosis into seasoned television Spin logowriter/producer/on-air talent at MTV, he never abandoned his love of the printed word. Adding to his labors at Melody Maker and the Eye, he freelanced for a stable of other newspapers and magazines, including Spin, Creem and The New York Post. NY Post logo

Kendall also served as Music Editor for Men's Style magazine and has contributed to MTV Online and a number of other Internet sites. Over the last 18 years, he has written hundreds of features, columns and reviews.
